BRANDSTORY

Born as Carl Williams to Costa Rican immigrant parents and raised in the Starrett City housing projects of East Brooklyn, Carl developed an early passion for fashion after watching his father and a Haitian tailor design and sell clothing. As demand for his own designs grew, a friend's remark "Your name ain't on it" inspired him to build a brand of his own. At eighteen, he repeatedly wrote the question "Can I really become a fashion designer?" in his journal. The phrase eventually inspired his new name, Karl Kani, turning both his identity and his clothing label into a symbol of ambition and self-belief.

In 1989, at just twenty years old, Carl moved to Los Angeles to expand his business. Despite being robbed shortly after opening his first store and facing financial struggles, he remained determined. Through persistence and networking, he gained access to valuable industry contacts, learning where to source fabrics, find denim wash factories, and scale garment production. He later advertised his oversized denim in Right On! Magazine, which generated strong demand, before securing national distribution through the retail chain Merry-Go-Round.

Carl's breakthrough continued after meeting Ed Lover and Dr. Dre from Yo! MTV Raps, who introduced his designs to prominent rappers and entertainers. Soon, artists such as Jay-Z, Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre were wearing and promoting the brand, making Karl Kani synonymous with the emerging hip-hop movement.
In 1991, Karl exhibited at the MAGIC Fashion Trade Show in Las Vegas as the only Black designer. His oversized jeans, hoodies, and loose-fitting silhouettes introduced authentic urban streetwear to mainstream retailers, helping define the look of 1990s hip-hop fashion.

Karl Kani reached another milestone when Tupac Shakur voluntarily appeared in an iconic Karl Kani advertising campaign, further cementing its status within hip-hop culture.
Over the following decades, Karl Kani expanded internationally, growing the brand into more than 25 countries.

Today, Carl is widely recognized as the "Godfather of Urban Streetwear," credited with bringing authentic street fashion into the mainstream and shaping the global relationship between hip-hop and fashion.
